Questions

Please note - this challenge contains a question that is time-dependent.  Within 3 hours of starting the final data stream, send an email to VASTChal2014MC3@vacommunity.org containing your answer to question MC3.1.  Please include a copy of your answer to MC3.1 in your final answer form also. Your answers to MC3.2 and MC3.3, along with your video, are due July 8.

The responses to these questions should be incrementally built, as you (the contestant) acquire information from each streaming data segment you receive.  Your submission will answer these questions in consideration of all of the streaming data segments.

MC3.1 - Within 3 hours after start the final data stream, send an email to VASTChal2014MC3@vacommunity.org containing:

a.       An image showing the streaming data in your visual analytics tool. In this image, identify an event of interest that you intend to investigate further.

b.      The content of the final message in the data stream

Answer for a:
The image showing the streaming data in our tool is given in Fig. 1-1.

Fig. 1-1

The event of interest that we intent to investigate further is the fire at Dancing Dolphin. Considering the other two segments' data, we can easily see the event's importance is very high according to our tool. The event is highlighted in red in bubble chart. The fire is said to be controlled at the beginning of segment 3, but it suddenly escalated. Besides, Dancing Dolphin is an apartment is not full of residents at every floor. Therefore, we think the fire there is suspicious.

Answer for b:
{"type":"mbdata","body":[ {"date":"20140123213200", "author":"gardener4958", "message":"RT @KronosStar There has been an explosion from inside the apartment building.  Several people are down. #KronosStar #DancingDolphinFire #AFDHeroes" } ]}

MC 3.2 - Describe the timeline of up to five major events that you discover in the streaming data. This timeline should include information from all three segments of the data stream if needed.    Use specific microblog records and call center data to support your description, but do not simply mimic back the data stream.  Provide a concise description of important participants, locations and durations.  Focus your response on the events themselves, rather than on the individuals reporting the events. Please limit your answer to no more than ten images and 1500 words.

We find four major events in the streaming data:

-          POK Rally;

-          fire at the Dancing Dolphin Apartment;

-          vehicle accident between a black van and a bicycle;

-          gunfire and subsequent events after the black van was stuck at the Gelato Galore.

Using our proposed tool, the timeline of each event is easy to see. We describe the details of each event as follows.

(1)    POK Rally

Fig. 2-1

As shown in Fig. 2-1, we can see that at 17:00:00 the leader of POK Sylvia Marek gave an opening remark to start the POK Rally at the Abila City Park. The location of “Egeou St/ Parla St” is selected as the event location. This is because it is closed to the “Abila City Park” on the tourist map.

Fig. 2-2

As shown in Fig. 2-2, we can see the progress and the arrangement of POK Rally around 17:15:10: special guest Dr. Newman was invited to give a talk with Prof. Stefano and Lucio Jacab, and the band Victor-E was invited to play music. Besides, we can also find there were more than 1000 people attending the rally.

Due to the word count limit, we only mark down some important progresses of the event. During the rally, heavy police presented but there was no violence reported. At 17:30:00, APD closed Parla St from Egeou St North to Alm St due to size of rally. At 17:32:00, Viktor-E talked about their song “River Soldiers” and played it. Around 17:50:00, Prof. Stefano gave a talk about the interdependence of corporate success and social wellbeing. After Prof. Stefano, Dr. Newman began her remarks. Sylvia Marek gave the closing remarks at 19:05:54, which indicates the end time of POK Rally. After the rally ended, Viktor-E played for one more hour.

(2)    Fire at the Dancing Dolphin Apartment

As we can see from Fig. 2-3, a fire started at the Dancing Dolphin Apartment a little earlier than 18:40:00 (as shown in this image). We found a witness “dangermice” reporting the whole progress of fire. This people’s microblog data include the longitude and latitude. With such information, we can check the fire location via the Geo Spatial as provided. We can see the fire location in Fig. 2-4, which also lists all the locations for the other three events.

Fig. 2-3

Fig. 2-4

Besides, we can find another witness “Onlythetruth” as shown in Fig. 2-5, he expressed the unsatisfactory with GasTech using the words to “burn the foreign capitalist pig”. It implies the Dancing Dolphin Apartment is close related with the company GasTech, which is an important clue.

Fig. 2-5

The progress of the fire can be described as follows. Around 18:45:00, it was said that the smoke was from first two floors of Dancing Dolphin Apartments. And Abila Fire Department indicated Dancing Dolphin apartment is a six story structure with the bottom three stories currently occupied later. Police cleared the area and rescued the residents in Dancing Dolphin around 19:00:00. Around 20:00:00, it was reported there was an injured firefighter, who was sent to the hospital later. Around 20:30:00, this fire was reported to be under control. But later, the top floors have collapsed into the first floor. At 20:40:00, Dancing Dolphin Fire was confirmed suddenly escalated. At 20:50:00, Fire officials have begun control measures on surrounding buildings. At 21:25:00, Abila Fire Department reported that the Dancing Dolphin fire was still not completely controlled. At 21:30:00, an explosion was reported at the Dancing Dolphin Apartment.

We can see that the fire was firstly controlled, but suddenly escalated and led to explosion at the end of the streaming data. It means the fire was still going on after 21:30:00. Its sudden change in the progress needs to be investigated further.

(3)    Vehicle accident between a black van and a bicycle

As we can see from the Fig. 2-6, at 19:19:00 a vehicle accident was reported on Souliou street. Simultaneously, we capture one witness of this event with the author name of “brewvebeenserved” (as shown in Fig. 2-7), who reported the same accident in more details: “That crazy driver hit a guy on a bike outside our shop”. This micro-blog message contains abundant information: the driver is crazy and the author is the shop owner. Combined with his/her GPS information, we can confirm that the accident’s location is the Katerina's Café using Geo Spatial, which is marked in the Fig. 2-4. We evidence ourselves the location is correct with another author’s message around the same time: “A bicyclist has been hit on the 500 block of Schaber near Katerina's Cafe and @Brew'veBeenServed”.

Fig. 2-6

Fig. 2-7

After the accident, around 19:24:00, Abila Police Department issued description of hit and run vehicle: a black van with partial license plate L829. In the following 20 minutes, we can continuously see the call center records of “SUSPICIOUS OCCUPIED VEHICLE-BLACK VAN” with different locations. It means that the black van ran away after hitting the bicycle, and had been traced by the police.

(4)     Gunfire and subsequent events after the black van was stuck at the Gelato Galore

As shown in Fig. 2-8, it was reported that the police have cornered the erratic driver in a parking lot near the intersection of Alexandrias and Ithakis and shots fired at 19:40:00. Later it was reported a policeman got hit.

Fig. 2-8

Fig. 2-9

As shown in Fig. 2-9, around 20:00:00, we find that the men on the van have hostages, and the standoff between the van guys and police started. Following up, the police sent out the SWAT to prepare rescuing the hostages at 19:55:00. At 20:11:21, it was said that negotiations began between shooter and police. Finally around 21:20:00, it was reported that one male and one female from the van surrendered and 2 female hostages were set free.

MC 3.3 – Select one of your five major events from question MC 3.2 that you consider to be most likely to provide additional clues to the investigation of the GASTech disappearances.   Describe the roles of the participants.  Describe how other events you identified in MC3.2 may have influenced your selected event. Provide a hypothesis and evidence as to whom you suspect as being directly involved in the GAStech disappearances, either as perpetrators or victims.  Please limit your response to no more than five images and 500 words.

From the analysis so far, Dancing Dolphin Fire is the event which is most likely to provide additional clues to investigation of the GASTech disappearances. OnlytheTruth is the witnesses of this event. One of his microblog gives us a clue that Dancing Dolphin Apartment has a close relationship with GASTech. Another witness is dangermice, who follows all the things happened in the Dancing Dolphin fire. We can see that the fire begins from the second floor at 18:45:00. The fire was reported to be under control around 20:30:00. But later, the fire suddenly escalated. At about 21:25:00, the fire was still not been completely controlled. Even an explosion happened at the Dancing Dolphin Apartment after a few minutes. Participant martaflores was in the apartment 301 before the fire happens. And GreyCatCollectibles first noticed that something was on fire.

We think the vehicle accident may have influence Dancing Dolphin fire. After the Dancing Dolphin Apartment was on fire, only a few minutes later a van hit a bicyclist near Katerina’s Café. As shown in Fig. 2-4, we can see that Katerina’s café was quite near to the Dancing Dolphin Apartment, we can assume that someone in the accident may be involved in the fire of Dancing Dolphin Apartment, who was in a hurry to escape from the crime scene but hit a bicycle.

GreyCatCollectibles publish microblogs said that he hasn’t heard from Rachel in days, hope she’s off on vaca somewhere and not in her apt. We can guess that some missing people from GASTech are living in Dancing Dolphin Apartment. And Rachel was one of the victim in this disappearances.
