Americas Stocks End Higher; Mexico Stocks Hit a Record

Mexican stocks shattered all previous records as they soared 2.3% to close just above 3400 points. Canadian shares rose on gains in base-metal and energy stocks, highlighting a session of widespread buying. Brazilian stocks staged a rally as demand increased for Telebras and lifted the market. Only Argentina posted a decline. Share prices there fell as the market nervously awaited specific legislative initiatives to trim the budget deficit and reacted to a news report that the government is planning to tax investment income. In dollar terms, the Americas sector of the Dow Jones World Stock Index fell 0.10 to 155.63 Tuesday, after gaining 0.27 Monday. The world index as whole gained 0.05 to 139.16 Tuesday, adding to Monday's gain of 0.18. Oil-drilling and oilfield-equipment issues led the Dow Jones Global Industry Groups, while biotechnology and fishing shares were among the laggers.
