Americas Stocks End Lower; Profit-Taking Hurts Mexico

Mexican stock prices fell as investors took profits after a series of spectacular rallies. Canadian share prices rose, supported by interest-rate cuts by the Bank of Canada and the country's major chartered banks. In Argentina, stocks declined as investors remained skeptical about the fate of a deficit-reduction package just introduced in Congress. Brazilian shares posted losses as investors watched events in neighboring Argentina in the absence of news elsewhere. In dollar terms, the Americas sector of the Dow Jones World Stock Index rose 1.34 to 156.88 Thursday, after falling 0.09 the previous day. The world index as whole gained 0.93 to 140.33, adding to Wednesday's gain of 0.23. Biotechnology and medical-and-biotechnology issues led the Dow Jones Global Industry Groups, while tobacco and oil-drilling shares were among the laggers.
