Crime Takes a Dip
May 03, 2011
Following a promising national trend, crime dropped due to declines in nearly every type of crime, from murder to rape to arson, according to newly-released statewide crime statistics. The 2.9 percent decline was fueled by 4 percent dip in crime, but the good news wasn't confined to the city. Crime rate was 8.6 percent lower in 2010 than 2009. All four categories of violent crimes dropped, while theft, a property crime, increased slightly by .3 percent. In individual suburban communities, the numbers were split about evenly. Statewide, crime declined by less than 1 percent, marking the third time in four years that statewide crime has decreased. The statistics mirror a national trend of declining crime which has been particularly pronounced in some of the nation's largest cities. Serious crimes decreased by two percent in 2010, marking the fourth consecutive year of declines, the FBI reported.
