Americas Stocks End Mixed; Mexico Sets Another Record

Mexican stocks set their second record close in as many days in a trading session shortened by a three-hour delay caused by protesters who blocked entrances to the stock exchange building. Canadian share prices rose on strong gains in Newbridge Networks. In Argentina, shares fell on investors' lingering concerns over the package of belt-tightening measures just sent to Congress. Brazilian stocks posted losses in a slow, uneventful trading session with no discernible trend in evidence. In dollar terms, the Americas sector of the Dow Jones World Stock Index declined 0.09 to 155.54 Wednesday, after falling 0.10 the previous day. The world index as whole rose 0.23 to 139.40 Wednesday, adding to Tuesday's gain of 0.06. Biotechnology and medical-and-biotechnology issues led the Dow Jones Global Industry Groups, while savings-and-loan and tobacco shares were among the laggers.
