Americas Stocks Close Lower; Mexico Falls on Profit-Taking
May 08, 2011
Mexican shares fell on profit-taking. Canadian stock prices slid, but still outperformed New York on the strength of gains in interest-sensitive issues and the forest-products sector. In Argentina, share prices closed mixed as investors awaited congressional action on a package of deficit-reduction measures. Brazilian stocks fell, influenced by higher yields on 30-year U.S. Treasury bills, a falling New York Stock Exchange index and C-bond ratings. In dollar terms, the Americas sector of the Dow Jones World Stock Index fell 0.61 to 155.52 Monday, after declining 0.75 Friday. The world index as whole lost 0.73 to 139.50, after dropping 0.07 Friday. Tobacco and medical-device shares led the Dow Jones Global Industry Groups, while consumer-electronics and steel issues were among the laggers.
