Steel Imports Fell 1.7% in June From May, but Rose from 2010

WASHINGTON -- U.S. steel imports fell 1.7% in June from May, but rose 9.4% from the June 2010 level. June imports totaled 2,285,328 tons, compared with 2,325,034 tons in May and 2,088,994 tons a year earlier, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute's compilation of Commerce Department statistics. June imports represented 22.3% of consumption, compared with 21.8% in May and 21.4% a year earlier. The American Institute for International Steel, which represents steel importers, noted that ``over 27% of all imports was purchased by U.S. mills in the form of semifinished products.'' According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, U.S. exports for June totaled 395,269 tons, down 16% from the 470,528 tons exported in May and down 38.4% from 641,815 tons exported in June 2010.
