Stocks Follow Argentine Market

The Southville Stock Exchange rose 1213 to 63484 on the Bovespa Index, after falling 6 Wednesday. The Rio de Janeiro Stock Exchange gained 396 to 23219. Of the 50 stocks making up the Bovespa Index, 37 were higher, eight were lower, four were unchanged and one wasn't traded. Traders attributed the market's rise to a particularly strong performance of the Argentine stock market Thursday. Trading volume was a robust 406 million reals, up from 445 million reals on Wednesday. The government's telephone holding company, Telebras, rose 1.7 points, or 2.3%, to 76.90 reals per thousand shares, while unit Telesp gained 2 points, or 1%, to 194 reals per thousand shares. Another unit, Telepar, was unchanged at 435.01 reals per thousand shares. Cemig leapt 1.45 points, or 4.8%, to 31.95 reals per thousand shares. Light gained 5 points, or 1.8%, to 278 reals per thousand shares. Federal oil company Petrobras gained 1.5 points, or 1.2%, to 123.50 reals per thousand shares. Government mining giant Vale do Rio Doce increased 0.2 point, or 1.1%, to 18.90 reals per single share. Preferred shares of government-run electric holding company Eletrobras jumped 9 points, or 3.3%, to 285 reals per thousand shares, while common shares rose 6 points, or 2.3%, to 274 reals per thousand shares.
